Vicoty Cheruto Returns Home After a Year of Silence and Uncertainty in Lebanon
Vicoty Cheruto, a young woman from Ziwa in Soy Constituency, Uasin Gishu County, has finally returned home after a long and painful journey that kept her family in distress for months. She travelled to Beirut, Lebanon on 29 November 2023, leaving Kenya in search of better employment opportunities and a chance to support her family through work abroad.
At the beginning of her stay in Lebanon, everything appeared to be normal. Vicoty was in contact with her family and seemed to be adjusting to life and work in a foreign country. Like many young Kenyans who travel abroad for domestic work opportunities, her hope was to build a better future and create stability for her loved ones back home.
However, the situation changed in 2025 when communication with her family became inconsistent and eventually stopped completely. Her last known contact with her family was between April and May 2025, after which she suddenly went silent. This unexpected break in communication caused deep worry and confusion, as her family had no information about her whereabouts or condition.
For months, Vicoty’s mother, Sally Cherop, and the entire family lived in pain and uncertainty, not knowing whether their daughter was safe, in trouble, or even alive. The silence created emotional distress as they tried everything possible to trace her without success.
Later, it was established that Vicoty had been held in jail in Lebanon for about one year. The circumstances surrounding her detention added to the family’s anguish, as they struggled to understand what had happened to her far away from home.
Her breakthrough finally came after friends, neighbours, and well wishers came together to support efforts to locate and assist her. Their contributions and collective action played a key role in pushing for her release and return. The intervention of the area Member of Parliament, Hon David Kiplagat, was also instrumental, as he facilitated her journey home by paying for her air ticket back to Kenya.
After a long period of uncertainty, silence, and detention in a foreign country, Vicoty Cheruto has finally landed safely back home. Her return marks the end of a painful chapter for her family and the beginning of healing and reunion after months of fear and unanswered questions.
Her story stands as a reminder of the challenges many young people face while seeking opportunities abroad and the importance of strong support systems for migrant workers. Today, her family and community celebrate her safe return and the hope that she is finally home where she belongs.
