Erastus Mwangi has been selected as a 2026 Distinguished Young Professional in recognition of his public service, leadership, and community involvement in the City of Lowell.

Mwangi currently serves as Assistant to the Mayor, a position in which he works closely with residents, community organizations, and various city departments to improve accessibility, responsiveness, and inclusivity within local government. Since joining the Mayor’s Office in 2022, he has served under three different mayors, becoming the first African to hold the role of Mayor’s Assistant in Lowell.

Originally from Kenya, Mwangi earned an associate degree in Banking and Finance in Nairobi before relocating to the United States, where he continued his studies in Business Administration at Salem State University.

In addition to his work in public service, Mwangi has remained actively engaged in community initiatives. He previously served as a juror for the MCC Asian Film Festival, spent four years as a member of the Lowell Citizens Advisory Board, and volunteered with New England Golden Gloves. He has also been selected to serve on the 2027 National Golden Gloves Tournament Committee.

During his time in city government, Mwangi contributed to several major initiatives, including Lowell’s recognition as the first U.S. Frontrunner City in Urban Transformation.

Mwangi is also a brain tumor survivor whose personal journey has inspired many in the community. Less than a year after undergoing his second brain surgery, he completed the 2026 Boston Marathon in 4 hours and 58 minutes while raising more than $6,000 for brain cancer research.

The 9th Annual Distinguished Young Professionals Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 16 at 12 p.m. at Four Oaks Country Club.
