A Humble Beginning in Kenya

Nine years ago, Derrick Mwiti was a young nurse trying to build a career in one of Kenya’s most challenging working environments. Fresh from the coastal city of Mombasa, he relocated to Mwingi in Kitui County to work with a non governmental organization serving local communities.

Life in Mwingi was far from easy. The region’s harsh heat, frequent water shortages, and unreliable communication networks created difficult working conditions for both health workers and residents. Despite these challenges, Mwiti remained committed to his profession and continued reporting to work every day to care for patients in need.

At the time, his dreams were simple and realistic. He hoped to one day secure a position at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi and establish a stable career within Kenya’s healthcare system. Moving abroad was not part of his plans.

Staying Committed Despite Challenges

Like many young professionals, Mwiti experienced moments of uncertainty during the early years of his career. Working in remote areas came with sacrifices, including limited resources and difficult living conditions.

However, instead of giving up, he chose to remain focused on his goals and continued building his experience step by step. He embraced every opportunity to learn, improve his skills, and grow professionally.

According to Mwiti, some of the seasons that felt like setbacks at the time later became the experiences that shaped his character and strengthened his resilience.

The Unexpected Journey to the United States

As the years went by, Mwiti’s career gradually opened doors he had never imagined possible. Through persistence, professional growth, and determination, he eventually relocated to the United States where he now works as a registered nurse in Texas.

Today, his life looks very different from the days he spent working under harsh conditions in Mwingi. Yet he says those experiences remain an important part of his story and personal growth.

Mwiti believes success is rarely instant. Instead, he describes his journey as one built through consistent effort, patience, and faith in the process.

A Message to Young Nurses

Now living and working in the United States, Mwiti continues to inspire many young healthcare workers back home in Kenya.

He encourages nurses who may feel discouraged by slow progress or difficult working conditions to remain patient and consistent in their efforts.

“Even when it feels like nothing is changing, keep showing up,” he says. “Progress often happens quietly before it becomes visible.”

His message resonates with many young professionals struggling to find opportunities or questioning whether their hard work will eventually pay off.
