Family Questions Police Report After Sudden Death of Young Kenyan Woman in Australia
The Sydney building where 25 year old Kenyan woman Sheila Jepkorir Chebii was reportedly found dead after allegedly falling from the 19th floor while working as a housekeeper at the Meriton Hotel. Her family is demanding answers as investigations into the mysterious incident continue.
The sudden death of 25 year old Kenyan woman Sheila Jepkorir Chebii in Sydney, Australia, has sparked grief, confusion, and growing calls for answers from her family and members of the Kenyan community abroad.
Sheila, who hailed from Eldoret, had only arrived in Australia about one month ago in pursuit of a better future. Family members say she was excited about beginning a new chapter in her life after securing a housekeeping job at the Meriton Hotel in Sydney. Relatives describe her as hardworking, focused, and full of hope as she adjusted to life in a foreign country.
However, what was meant to be the beginning of a promising journey quickly turned into tragedy after Sheila was found dead under circumstances that her family says remain unclear and suspicious.
According to relatives, Sheila reported to work on Monday as usual at the hotel where she had recently started working as a housekeeper. The family says authorities later informed them that Sheila had allegedly fallen from the 19th floor of the building to the 4th floor.
Police are reportedly treating the case as suicide, but the explanation has raised serious concerns among family members who say many details surrounding the incident do not make sense.
The family claims Sheila’s body showed only limited visible injuries despite the alleged fall from such a height. They reported injuries including a small wound on the forehead, a dent near one eye, bruises on the arms, and an injury on the hip. Relatives say they expected far more severe injuries if she had indeed fallen from the 19th floor.
Questions have also emerged regarding the lack of witnesses. According to the family, no one reportedly saw Sheila fall. They say surveillance cameras captured Sheila entering a hallway on the 19th floor while carrying out her routine cleaning duties, but there was reportedly no camera coverage on the 4th floor where her body was later found.
A colleague is said to have discovered Sheila on the 4th floor, but the family says there is still no clear explanation of exactly what happened between the time she entered the room on the 19th floor and the moment she was found.
The timeline provided by authorities has also deepened the mystery. Family members claim police reports indicated Sheila died at around 12:30 pm. However, relatives insist that at the same time she was allegedly declared dead, Sheila had contacted her cousin through a phone call and also sent text messages.
The family is now demanding a transparent and independent investigation into the incident. They are also questioning why hotel operations reportedly continued as normal following the tragedy and why the employer has allegedly remained unavailable to communicate with the family.
In addition, relatives claim no official workplace incident reports were made to safety authorities, something they believe should have happened immediately after such a serious event at the hotel.
The case has triggered emotional reactions online, with many Kenyans both at home and abroad expressing shock and concern over the safety and wellbeing of young Africans seeking opportunities overseas. Members of the Kenyan community in Australia have also reportedly stepped in to support the grieving family as they seek answers and prepare for the difficult process of repatriating Sheila’s body back to Kenya.
As investigations continue, Sheila Jepkorir Chebii’s family says they will not stop pushing for the truth. For them, the unanswered questions surrounding her final moments remain too serious to ignore.
