Pastor and Truck Driver Hailed as Hero After Rescuing Kidnapped Graduate in South Carolina
A South Carolina pastor and truck driver is being praised for his quick thinking and bravery after helping save a young woman who had allegedly been kidnapped by a man posing as a police officer.
Pastor Anthony J. Moore, 53, was driving his semi truck through Aiken County on May 29, 2026, when he witnessed a terrifying scene unfold on the roadway. As he traveled along the highway, a young woman suddenly ran into traffic toward his truck, screaming and desperately seeking help. According to Moore, the woman appeared frightened and repeatedly shouted that a man was trying to kidnap her.
The young woman had graduated from high school just one day earlier. Investigators later revealed that she had been walking home when she was approached by a man identified as 39 year old Jonathan Willard. Authorities say Willard falsely claimed to be a law enforcement officer and convinced the young woman that she was being detained. He allegedly placed handcuffs on her and forced her into the back seat of his white Cadillac.
According to investigators, the victim was able to seize an opportunity to escape when Willard left a door open. Despite having her hands still cuffed behind her back, she managed to get out of the vehicle and run toward the highway in search of help. Her desperate escape quickly turned into a life threatening situation as the suspect allegedly attempted to run her over while she fled.
Moore recalled seeing the woman running directly toward his truck while a vehicle maneuvered aggressively around her. When she reached him, she was frantic and pleaded for protection. The pastor immediately realized something was seriously wrong and acted to ensure her safety.
Witnesses said the suspect then approached Moore's truck and displayed what appeared to be a badge, claiming that he was a police officer. However, the young woman insisted he was lying and begged not to be handed back over to him. Another motorist stopped to assist and contacted emergency services while the suspect eventually fled the scene.
Law enforcement officers later discovered additional evidence that strengthened the case against the suspect. Investigators found a cut chain on a nearby fence, a detail they believe supports allegations that the abduction had been carefully planned. The discovery added another layer of concern to what authorities described as a disturbing and deliberate crime.
A key breakthrough in the investigation came from Moore's dashboard camera. The footage captured critical moments of the incident, including the victim's escape and the suspect's actions. Authorities credited the video evidence with helping them quickly identify and track down the suspect.
Jonathan Willard was arrested the following day and charged with kidnapping and impersonating a law enforcement officer. Additional investigations into the case remain ongoing as authorities work to determine whether there may have been other victims or related incidents.
For Moore, the experience was both shocking and deeply personal. As the pastor of Amazing Grace Ministries in Denmark, South Carolina, he said he believes he was in the right place at the right time for a reason. His actions, combined with the courage of the young woman and the assistance of another passing driver, helped bring a frightening ordeal to an end and may have saved a life.
The incident has drawn widespread attention across social media, with many people praising Moore's calm response and willingness to step in during a dangerous situation. Others have applauded the young woman's courage in escaping her alleged captor and fighting for her freedom despite the overwhelming circumstances she faced.
As the case continues through the legal system, many are calling the rescue a powerful reminder of how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference when they choose to act in a moment of crisis.
