Body of Missing Kenyan Student Benina Jepkoech Recovered in Canada Weeks After Tragic River Accident
Jepkoech went missing on May 17, 2026, after the vehicle she was travelling in plunged into the North Thompson River in Kamloops, British Columbia. The accident triggered an extensive search operation involving emergency responders, rescue teams and community volunteers. Despite repeated efforts, challenging river conditions and strong currents made the search extremely difficult, leaving her loved ones anxiously waiting for answers.
A 21 year old passenger who was travelling with Jepkoech survived the crash and was successfully rescued from the river. However, Jepkoech remained unaccounted for as search teams combed the area for days before operations were eventually scaled back due to dangerous conditions. Her disappearance attracted widespread attention, particularly among Kenyans living abroad, many of whom joined in prayers and appeals for support during the search efforts.
Originally from Uasin Gishu County, Jepkoech had moved to Canada in 2025 to pursue a Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree. Like many young Kenyans seeking educational and professional opportunities overseas, she had embarked on a journey filled with hope and ambition. Friends describe her as hardworking, focused and determined to build a better future for herself and her family.
The news of her recovery has been met with deep sorrow across the Kenyan diaspora community. While her family had continued to hold onto hope throughout the search, the confirmation of her death has left many mourning the loss of a young woman whose life was cut tragically short.
Community members in Kamloops and beyond have paid tribute to Jepkoech, remembering her kindness, resilience and positive spirit. Messages of condolence have continued to pour in from friends, classmates and well wishers who followed the story closely and offered support to her family during the difficult weeks of uncertainty.
Although the recovery of her body brings some closure, the pain of her loss remains profound for those who knew and loved her. Her death serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change and how fragile life can be.
As preparations begin to return her remains to her family and loved ones, many are reflecting on the dreams she carried with her when she left Kenya to study abroad. Those dreams inspired her journey and touched the lives of many people she met along the way.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Benina Jepkoech's family, friends and the wider Kenyan community during this difficult time. May she rest in eternal peace.
