From KMTC to Employee of the Month in the United States A Story of Determination, Growth, and Compassion

A Kenyan healthcare worker is earning recognition in the United States after being named Employee of the Month at The Oaks at Lakewood. Veronica’s journey reflects persistence, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to caring for others, qualities that continue to define many Kenyans thriving abroad.

Humble Beginnings in Kenya

Veronica  Wanjiru began her journey in Kenya, where she trained as a nurse at the Kenya Medical Training College. Like many young professionals, she had ambitions that stretched beyond borders. Driven by the desire to grow her career and improve her future, she made the bold decision to relocate to the United States in 2018.

Starting from the Ground Up

Upon arriving in the US, Veronica began working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Tacoma General Hospital. For two years, she gained hands-on experience, building her confidence and sharpening her clinical and interpersonal skills in a demanding healthcare environment.

She later moved to Western State Hospital, where she spent one year expanding her knowledge and adapting to different patient care settings. Each step in her journey contributed to her growth, preparing her for greater responsibility and impact.

Finding a Home at The Oaks at Lakewood

Veronica eventually joined The Oaks at Lakewood, a move influenced by recommendations from friends who spoke highly of the supportive work environment. Two years later, she has become an integral part of the facility.

Working as both a shower aide and floor aide, Veronica has distinguished herself through her dedication to resident care. She focuses not only on meeting physical needs but also on building meaningful relationships with residents.

Compassion at the Core of Her Work

Healthcare is not without its challenges. Veronica often encounters residents who may resist care or feel overwhelmed. Her approach is grounded in patience and empathy. She listens, builds trust, and gently guides residents to understand the importance of their care.

Her ability to connect with people on a human level has made her stand out among her peers. Colleagues describe her as dependable, compassionate, and deeply committed to her work.

What Drives Her Every Day

For Veronica, fulfillment comes from ensuring residents are comfortable, respected, and well cared for. She values the appreciation she receives from both residents and coworkers, as well as the strong sense of teamwork within her workplace.

She also credits the management and staff at The Oaks for creating an environment where employees feel supported and motivated to give their best.

Words of Advice to Others

Veronica’s message to others, especially those in the diaspora, is simple but powerful. Stay positive, work hard, and always have a goal. She believes success comes from consistency, discipline, and maintaining focus even in challenging moments.

A Proud Moment for the Kenyan Diaspora

Her recognition as Employee of the Month is more than a personal achievement. It represents the resilience and excellence of many Kenyans working abroad who continue to make a difference in their communities.
