From the American Dream to Building Back Home: Benson Gitau’s Journey

For many, the idea of the American Dream represents opportunity, stability, and success. For Benson Gitau, it was a journey that began with hope, tested his resilience, and ultimately led him back home to Kenya with a new perspective on life, purpose, and freedom.

Benson relocated to the United States in 2011 after winning the green card lottery. Like countless others in the diaspora, he arrived determined to build a better future. However, the transition was not without its challenges. Adjusting to a new culture, environment, and system required both patience and support. He credits a welcoming host family for playing a crucial role in helping him settle and find his footing during those early days.

Seeking structure and a sense of purpose, Benson made the bold decision to join the U.S. Marines. His military journey would take him to Afghanistan, where he experienced the harsh realities of service in a high-pressure environment. Beyond the physical demands, he encountered deep emotional and psychological challenges. Exposure to trauma, near-death situations, and the loss of fellow service members left a lasting impact, shaping his outlook on life in profound ways.

After spending 13 years in the United States, Benson began to reassess his priorities. While acknowledging the opportunities available in the West, he also recognized a growing sense of limitation that many in the diaspora quietly experience. The structure and demands of life abroad, though rewarding in some ways, can also feel restrictive. In September 2024, he made the life-changing decision to return to Kenya.

Back home, Benson has embraced a new chapter focused on entrepreneurship and impact. Through his company, Jambo Home Ventures, he is helping bridge the gap between the diaspora and opportunities in Kenya. The business focuses on real estate and property management, while also guiding Kenyans abroad who are looking to invest back home.

Benson’s journey highlights an important message for anyone considering life abroad or planning a return home. Success is not defined by location alone, but by clarity of purpose and the freedom to build a life that aligns with personal values. He encourages others to plan carefully, think long-term, and understand that while the American Dream offers opportunity, true fulfillment often comes from creating something meaningful on your own terms.

His story is not just about leaving or returning. It is about growth, self-discovery, and redefining what success truly means.
